welcome to it's a long road the ramble series podcast i'm your host and joining me on this episode is jared talkstein if
0:39
you like the kind of jared's jib on this episode check him out on an episode we did together on the same last of the
0:45
action heroes podcast network feed where we covered burt reynolds heat he's agreed to come do something again maybe
0:52
first one's a little bit better film that heat jared welcome to the show thank you brian it's a pleasure to
0:57
return to the network you know i'm looking forward to talking about first blood it's probably a little better film
1:04
than heat in my estimation how dare you although he you know we did talk about
1:10
was a a nice surprise i think going in with burt reynolds expectations for a 1985 film we had a blast
1:17
yeah absolutely it's hard to believe first blood chemo three years before heat oh man
1:24
you think totally you think heat or bert reynolds would have been like you know what we got up our game a little bit you know three years previous to this film
1:30
we had first blood but no we'll do heat why don't you introduce uh who you are
1:36
and uh what podcast you represent what you do on your show okay my name is jared toxtein and i'm one of
1:42
the co-hosts of the hyperspace podcast the full name being the hyperspace
1:48
podcasting in the 25th century and me and my co-host matt and mike we talk
1:53
about the kind of pop culture and stuff that we grew up with in the 70s and 80s because ryan as you know the 70s and 80s
2:01
were the best time ever for pop culture movies television music
2:06
that's kind of what we talk about on our show and how it's impacted us as we've grown into middle age what do you got
2:12
going on for the month of april may kind of what's the latest episodes what's the future here near future we're finishing out
2:20
april with we're gonna be completing our fifth season of the show and we usually
2:25
take a couple of months off a couple times a year so we're getting ready to finish that up but in may we will be
2:31
doing weekly shows because we'll be following the obi-wan kenobi show on
2:36
disney plus so all throughout may and some of june we'll be doing that then in the middle
2:42
of the summer we'll be back with another season of uh regular shows from the hyperspace one of my favorite episodes
2:48
we've done was just kind of this discussion about fast food apps terrible drive-through
2:54
experiences and it really was just one of my favorite shows we've ever done and it's like this half hour thing that has
3:00
nothing to do with pop culture but i think it's a good starter episode if anybody wants to jump
3:06
in it's called the shake machine is not working i love it there's a conspiracy about
3:12
that why the yes yeah all right the conspiracy behind ice cream machine is not working so we talk about kind of
3:18
how it impacts us when the shake machines are not working uh but we don't really get into the
3:24
conspiracy of course we are aware of it okay good so all right well that's awesome i think you're an excellent
3:30
podcaster you have a great voice for podcasting i don't mean that just the tone and timber but also your insights
3:37
thoughts are very concise and thank you you're an easy edit on my end oh well
3:42
thank you sir and right back at you i should say at the outset i am a more of
3:47
a rocky guy than a rambo guy i definitely grew up with rocky and i was not allowed
3:55
as a kid to watch r-rated films if my wife deems them appropriate of
4:01
course yeah so i came to rambo pretty late i didn't see first blood till i was in college in the
4:08
oh in the mid 90s holy smokers that's the first question i asked my guest so what is your relationship with ramble
4:14
and specifically your first but so you saw it as a young adult yeah i was in college
4:21
when i saw it probably 95 when i saw first blood of course i've subsequently seen all of the sequels okay well what's
4:29
your overall thoughts on the first one do you remember what you felt at the time i mean this was you know 30 almost 30 years ago but what was your thoughts
4:35
of the time 95 when you saw it the one thing that struck me about this film and the last 10 minutes of the movie really
4:41
tie it together for me stallone's performance in that particular section of the film is
4:47
really great it is good acting it's not good acting for stallone
4:52
it's good acting i mean it's a great performance that's what impacted me you know it was a mixture of kind of a
4:58
rousing adventure action movie up until that point where i think the tone changes dramatically uh it gets really
5:06
serious and not to say that the events of the movie aren't serious but like rocky
5:12
rambo is a character in his original film who who transformed into something else
5:18
later sure well to say rocky didn't transform into some sort of superhero action figure parts three and four
5:25
would be lying yes he has since been brought back to earth uh in subsequent movies but and i don't know i guess you
5:32
could argue the same has happened with john rambo to some degree for the different reasons that they provide for
5:38
the silliness for the craziness for the fun because at the end of the day all the rambo films are fun they're just fun
5:43
i love rambo three there's some great moments in it it's silly it's bonkers but i love it your enthusiasm is
5:49
completely infectious because it comes across as a listener to the show
5:55
you love this as much as you love rocky which is saying something because i know you love rock i love rocky and i love
6:00
rambo if you're listening to this ravel series and if you are a rocky fan and you want to check out my other show it's called one more round the rocky series
6:06
podcast on the same network there might be some bleed over but i think i've got i don't know i got listeners of this show who don't listen to rocky episodes
6:13
which is great and like you were saying jared you're more of a rocky guy and so i was
6:18
raised on both i loved rocky and rambo at the same time for different reasons for the same amount of years that makes
6:24
i i was raised on both characters yeah yeah okay can i say before you start i'm sorry no don't apologize no no you
6:31
because i'm talking i've got i've got you here live i'd like to tell you that you and katie and kyle are killing it on
6:38
the new rocky show i am loving that show well thank you very much so great job
6:44
thank you very much appreciate that have you listened to these uh reblogs by chance i've listened to the first two
6:50
okay but i am a little behind how dare you i'm sorry at the time of this recording only episode three is out for you to
6:56
listen to so all right okay okay well i feel better then nobody has to listen to my show for
7:03
the ramble series i'm i'm actually going to be getting listeners or correction guest hosts that may have never listened
7:09
to my show i'm going to be doing i'm going to be branching out to some other host of other podcasts the goal is to kind of reach out cuz this is my i get
7:16
to reach out a little bit further out of the circle of the slide um so to speak okay yeah and you're one of those you're
7:21
kind of the yeah you're sort of that first kind of branching out outside the uh network hosts okay okay all right
7:28
we got a good part here well you lucked out this is all random so whoever my next guest is after you i actually don't
7:34
know where we're going to start because it all depends where we end so how we end this episode just you know we do about an hour of recording so
7:41
it's just going to have a natural ending where it might be i kind of have an idea where it might be but if it's after or before that's fine
7:47
last episode i did an episode with kyle who is my co-host on the one more round
7:52
podcast he had to go he had a heart out and it's too bad because we got literally to the part where rambo is
7:58
overlooking the cliff and he had to go he couldn't make the jump he couldn't make the man this is arguably the most
8:04
iconic scene in the film yeah it's insane but i want you to see here again
8:10
jared just sly and you know of course slide the actor but ram we talked about it so i won't talk about too much because we talked about what sly was doing in real
8:16
life at the edge of the clip but just i want you just to get a feel again of the peril that sure john rambles in
8:25
[Music]
8:38
huh okay so john's heard the barking of the dogs he's at the edge of the cliff i
8:43
guess in his mind there's no other way out it's either i have to scale the cliff or
8:49
go back to where the hunt is after him so he's he's kind of pissed off that he's cornered you can tell he's angry at
8:54
this situation yes 100 there's some desperation there in his
8:59
face he's in a tough spot he's in a very tough spot [Music]
9:10
[Applause] now check out the stunt work here now i
9:17
think the far away shots would have to be a stuntman i would think because he is right there on the edge of that cliff
9:24
you know after the scene plays out i'd like to talk about some of the stunt work here because this is
9:30
there's no cgi in the early 80s anyway we'll get there yeah
9:37
yeah that running right there so you see that right running that overhead shot with ramble running on that edge it's a
9:43
stunning it's a stunt guy yeah okay yeah we talked about this during the motorcycle chase sequence on the episode before this one where any close-up shot
9:50
of course would slide on the motorcycle anything that was remotely far away especially back then we didn't have high
9:55
def now with the high def i hate to say it you can kind of see the cheats a little bit more the high def allows you to see that it's not sly's face a lot of
10:02
these things so mm-hmm
10:09
[Music] just the amazing score by jerry goldsmith that panic score oh yeah it's
10:17
his score is awesome love the score the uh oh go ahead yeah no no no please continue you just want to watch the
10:23
movie i'll pick it up next time you stop okay
10:29
now sly is going over the ledge here and according to sly you know i know he likes to spin tails a little bit of
10:35
but he's a bit of a storyteller in just by nature but he did say that when he
10:40
went over this edge it was it was about a 15-foot drop and he had no safety support okay
10:46
that's perilous that's perilous but it's not going to kill you it'll just break your knees yeah exactly
10:56
this shot right here which is a great shot this is a great trick photographer he's going over a real ledge there's no
11:03
cable to slide you can see there's nothing on him here there's no cgi wire release nowadays you'd have an actor go
11:08
over it he's got more cables you can count tied around and they're all cgi'd out this is sylvester stallone doing this
11:14
right here that's that close-up shot that i'm talking about yeah it's close and it's a beautiful shot too that i think this the restored version of this
11:20
film is just the green and the plush it's just yes i don't know if did you ever pick up
11:26
the 4k disc no i haven't yet you did have you watched it yet on that yes yeah i watched it the other night what are
11:31
your thoughts on that version the transfer is beautiful you know when he's in the cave with the flames i mean it's
11:39
you are right though the 4k does reveal some secrets
11:45
but overall it's it's a beautiful trench i believe this film is 40 years old no not really it looks like this guy watch
11:52
looks like it was a movie shot yesterday yes it looks great [Music]
12:03
so i love the secrets coming up because you got the helicopter now coming with galt gold is in the helicopter now this
12:09
helicopter we learned last episode i don't know if you caught it on your viewing there recently but it's from the local lumber camp it's okay it's not a
12:16
police helicopter so the guy flying the helicopter is just a lumber guy yes which makes more sense when you kind of
12:22
watch the actions of galt and how he threatens the guy well yeah yeah they address it in the movie don't they i don't remember
12:28
the exact dialogue as per what goal says it will get to it but my understanding is is that
12:34
teasel told them go get the helicopter from the lumber yeah this helicopter is on the loan right
12:40
okay but i think the guy flying is a lumber worker he's not i don't think he's law enforcement it's funny i've seen this movie a hundred times but now
12:46
doing this piecemeal and breaking down every scene i actually keep learning stuff even as i watch it again like i probably see this
12:52
a hundred times easily yeah [Music]
13:03
[Music]
13:08
now this is great work here this repelling this stunt guy i know that can't be sliding i'm 99 sure it isn't
13:15
sliding because this is a far away shot this guy is rappelling down these this rock face that's a guy on a rock face
13:20
and i don't know what he's holding on to with what i would imagine the way this this is framed
13:26
there's probably some safety equipment concealed in there somewhere they may have got a free climber to do some of
13:33
this stuff because i mean you know there are guys who will scale you know just sheer rock cliffs with their bare hands
13:40
it's insane i would be surprised if there wasn't i mean it looks you can't see it from here but i'd be surprised if
13:46
there wasn't some sort of harness or something involved in this shot just because it's so far away now the main
13:52
stunt guy his name is buddy joe hooker and he's still alive today and i went to look for him online we'll get to him in
13:59
a second but that may or may not be him here i'm not sure they had 14 different stuntmen for this show
14:04
so quite a few stunts obviously for this movie but buddy joe hooker is the main dude and he still does stunts today in his
14:11
70s it's insane oh wow yeah he probably sets things up more now he's probably a consultant type thing sure yeah
14:19
[Music]
14:32
so of course now rambo slash sly slid down this rock face and now this close-up obviously he's not very high
14:38
they can't you know they got crew all around him with the cameras what have you that's just your your classic camera trickery with close-up cliff shots that
14:44
old movies do but these squibs that go off are quite real and it also becomes an issue when
14:50
he's hiding behind the tree later but i'll just say it now so when the scripts go off sly had to like time himself to
14:55
when they would go off or else they'd just go inside he has no eye protection on and they're right next to his face and he said that when they were going
15:00
off they were zinging off his arms and stuff that it was quite painful oh yeah i can imagine good grief
15:06
[Music] this is a great shot here so you got sly
15:13
hanging onto that edge and the helicopter coming over to his left shoulder it's a great cinematography shot
15:18
[Music]
15:24
yeah i like how he's sharing the frame with the helicopter with this shot there is a
15:31
real helicopter flying into this gorge yes and sly is hanging there they had to
15:37
do this a few times and sly was uh i would say he wasn't happy but he was getting tired
15:43
and the scripts kept hurt hurting them and the wind was real some of the wind issues that we see the helicopter go through were real wind conditions that
15:49
they were experiencing and this is all very dangerous situation in real life oh wow [Music]
15:59
now this actor i forget his name i think it's jack something who passed away who plays galt anyways he actually plays
16:06
galt that's really him hanging that helicopter again a lot of shots of him in the helicopter no cgi that's the
16:11
actor kind of hanging out that helicopter with the rifle they did a lot of great shots of him so again just these actors really put themselves on
16:17
the line for this film yeah yeah
16:23
so this shot here you got this far away shot and you can see that the stunt double has this face right hidden into
16:29
the rocks which kind of makes sense sure it's a combination of rambos hiding trying to make himself as small as
16:35
possible against the rock face but at the same time the stunt doubles not showing his face to the crowd exactly
16:41
but what do you see there like any indication what he might be holding on safety gear anymore well on this particular shot
16:47
no because i think you're close enough to where the stuntman is that you would see this stuff and unless
16:55
unless he's just holding into a spike or something that's been put into the mountain there that's insane i wonder
17:01
how high he is because we don't see the bottom this shot no i mean he's at least 30 feet high 30 40. and we know there
17:07
are some falls coming so they must they obviously have air bags underneath that we don't see off-screen sure sure so even if the guy quote-unquote falls
17:13
still scary but i suspect right now there's the uh what do you call those big airbags that capture people there's
17:19
some just like air that's what i would call like probably some stuntman term for it but yeah
17:25
i wish there was some sort of device where we could look on i know if only we had access to an
17:31
encyclopedia that had everything encyclopedia that'd be amazing that was like instantaneously gave you answers
17:36
that because you could talk to and ask that's weird now you're just being crazy
17:46
[Music] yeah right i have to wonder in this
17:52
particular shot how far do you think sly's just standing on something he oh he has to be he of
17:58
course yeah of course look i love sly and i i know i know ramble the character superhuman strength but of course sly
18:05
has to be he's standing on something absolutely there's no way he could hang because there's a it takes a long time to get these shots you can't just no no
18:11
of course
18:17
see this shot here like this is a helo this is a actual helicopter in the air you can see the blades going so this
18:23
actor who plays gold he's just leaning right out of that thing a movie of this vintage if they were
18:29
using trickery it would be given away very easily the green screen and all that stuff from the
18:35
80s well that's true it'll be like some kind of rear projection but that stuff was
18:40
always looked fake and that's how you know that this is done practically in camera because there's
18:47
none of those telltale signs and the actor that plays gold he is so pissed
18:52
off he just can't wait to shoot this guy the combination of glee and anger he has
18:58
now literally shooting this guy off the cliff is he has thrown any kind of human care out of the world he wants this guy
19:04
dead yes 100 quite menacing he can't wait
19:10
[Music]
19:17
what the hell's going on what are you doing we're just supposed to spot him another great shot here you see the guy
19:24
gold hanging out of the helicopter holding the rifle the helo's right there but this is another just how close that
19:29
helicopter is to stallone yes it's fantastic so we know that stallone is high enough that the helicopter's there
19:36
too if that makes sense yes you know i gotta imagine whatever that he's on they've erected some kind of scaffolding
19:43
or something for him to stand on because you're right we can't see what's going on right
19:48
underneath sly but that helicopter is 50 feet away from him or it's just movie
19:54
magic my friend movie magic i don't know films of this vintage give away their movie magic pretty easily and
20:00
that looks pretty real
20:09
the helicopter pilots okay look well i'm in a thermal draft the helicopter's going everywhere i can't hold this i can't hold it steady for you to shoot
20:16
even if you wanted to hit him we're told this is a spot and we spotted him and now gulp will give his response to how
20:23
he feels about this helicopter pilot telling him what's up
20:37
i swear to god now that is some pretty rough adr right there
20:42
sure the dialogue well it's a helicopter there's no way they can do this it but it seems like they could have
20:49
tried just a little bit harder like maybe he's raising his voice instead of interesting
20:56
um i'm gonna kill you it seems like he'd be like i'm gonna kill you yeah you're
21:02
right they maybe could have that may be something they could have had him yell at for real yeah just so you could hear
21:08
me yeah because there's no way it's so noisy on a helicopter you're not hearing that yeah and it just punch it up a little
21:14
bit that's fair you know that makeup job on his face is amazing too yeah absolutely he's got the puffy eye
21:21
and mm-hmm now t-let's try to get a hold of gold sheriff the gold come in gulp
21:29
[Music]
21:37
we talked about this before but teasel in his own right or in his own characteristic good kind of way he's
21:43
still trying to have some sort of semblance of order to this chaos he's trying his darndest to
21:49
keep this under order yes you know he doesn't want galt to assassinate rambo no you know at this
21:55
point in time you know he's trying like you said to maintain some order in this situation which is
22:02
rapidly losing control of right like i'll say getting closer and hold
22:07
this steady two impossible tasks we can't get much closer to this rock face and the deeper they go into the rock i
22:13
think the tougher the thermal draft is mm-hmm
22:19
what's going on all right so now of course rambo
22:25
recognizes enough gun play he's like the helicopter is pretty darn close he's got
22:31
his two called tracer shots or amy's shots or we call it the military like sights
22:36
sighting shots so galt is actually ex-military as well he knows what he has to do now so he's i
22:42
got him easy easy so he knows on this next shot i got this guy and he's not that far away anymore with the long range with the long scope rifle there
22:48
and he's going to hit he's going to end rambo knows this so now rambo's like okay take the shot which will make me
22:55
fall anyways and or kill me or do i jump this scene this scene coming up does it
23:01
ever get less thrilling no it's fantastic and it's because you know this was all done on location
23:09
it's a guy jumping off a sheer face of a mountain it's insane it's the most the
23:14
same stunts i've ever seen on screen it's great [Music]
23:38
let's go back because this okay to this day i don't know how they do this stunt if
23:44
they are insane this case just so you know there's three parts of this done okay yes there's the first guy buddy joel
23:49
hooker is the first fall that's him the big long one and i don't know who does the second
23:56
part but there's another stunt man who does that second sequence that we just see there just when he started to hit the trees which is insanity to me yeah
24:02
so how does he stop there's no airbag there in the pine trees i don't know
24:07
what i to this day i get the first the first part we kind of get the way they film it
24:13
he just will fall off screen into an airbag still a crazy stunt probably a hundred foot drop insanity absolute
24:19
insanity to me and i love how when we see rambo fall but that shot that they do
24:26
above and the helicopters in the air is the body for they they shoot it from down low and you see the chopper and his body in
24:33
the same shot that had to take a lot of planning oh yeah and the execution of
24:38
that was brilliant so let's watch that again and then we'll talk about the third part of the stump because that involves uh mr stallone
24:56
wow so sly did that last third yeah that's when he
25:02
hit that's crazy when he hit that initial hit that's the most violent part of the stunt
25:07
slide did it and he did it he only did it twice only they wanted him to do it a third time he told him to basically f
25:13
off oh wow sly hits that branch and he said that he
25:19
the idea was to hit his stomach more the soft part of his stomach but he hit his ribs
25:25
now this guy he has almost died and i don't know how many films seriously yeah exactly
25:32
again dolph lundgren almost kills him in part four yes what boxer punched him in
25:37
auditioning for rocky i think it was three well i fair which boxer it was but he i don't know if you heard about this one
25:42
so he wanted a real boxer for part three and but they got clubber and said because he said that a real boxer
25:49
punched him just in the arm he said it was like a shock went through his body and he couldn't use his arm anymore
25:54
for a while what yeah and then and then in expendables he broke his neck fighting steve austin oh my gosh he has
26:02
a metal plate in his neck right now from and they kept that in the film as well so this this injury here was real he hurt
26:08
himself and so the wincing of the pain is real but he goes oh jesus that was a real we'll go back to that again okay
26:16
that's the second stunt guy but this is the there's a sly coming now [Music]
26:36
and that's him hitting the ground obviously yeah that's the thing there's no you know how these movies they'll do like the uh stunt man will jump over the
26:42
boxes and then the actor comes up the reveals yeah that all switcheroo yes then the slide didn't want that he
26:48
wanted i want to be in the trees and i will follow the trees and the audience will see that it was me that fell the trees there you go that's dedication it
26:56
works he's insane it holds up i mean it holds up a hundred percent it does hold up there's a great
27:02
sequence to terminator 2 where t100 is being chased or he's actually trying to catch up sorry to uh the kid on the
27:08
motorcycle and he does that motorcycle the jump that's always sequence but you could totally tell us a stunt double
27:14
they had no choice no they linger on it way too long yeah but and you can see it's not arnold it's not
27:20
arnold and today's high def and everything else now they could cgi arnold's face on it easily enough for any kind of redux type versions but sure
27:27
but that's what i love about slime he's doing these if you see that's why i say if you see sly's face
27:32
he wants you to know he did it yeah now this shot here of gold coming on the helicopter again just this great camera
27:38
work with the helicopter and it's going to do this uh amazing hovering job as they try to shoot a ramble behind the
27:43
tree and again sly was talking about how this was really important he talks about the timing he knew when the scopes were
27:49
going to go off because they had to go off watch it and think about what this means for an actor that he has to make sure
27:56
his face isn't in front of the squib when it fires off the tree or else all that stuff's gonna go on his
28:01
eyes yeah so watch it as he times that
28:09
where's that oh there he is
28:21
that's great over there dummy gold he just he just hates everybody he does
28:26
he's a lot of the reason that this has happened yeah he's the one who initially escalated everything in the basement
28:33
there well he said clean them up clean them up
28:41
now this is another great framework here you've got the helicopter covering down just like that and and you got rambo
28:47
with his back against the tree that's a great frame right there yeah you don't see framework like that today i don't
28:52
know what it is about this shot here you don't quite see that it's so real looking because it is real
28:57
there's just it's real there's no there's no no there's no trickery here
29:02
and like i said early 80s trickery always gives itself away but this is real all these elements are really
29:08
together in a frame it's awesome [Music]
29:22
[Music]
29:30
it's great the helicopter goes back and forth the squibs go off sly has to react and you can see the
29:35
squibs are real because look at you took a chunk out of the tree yeah the tree is damaged yeah and that was sly's face
29:41
right there he had to move it just in time [Music]
29:51
now this fantasy grabs a rock i love it oh yeah
30:02
[Music] now this is actually very realistic had
30:08
well rambo did but had you know if the helicopter gets hit like that in the windshield that would startle anyway
30:13
especially if you didn't see it coming so it's very plausible that the pilot's gonna jerk the joystick around a little sure yeah and gold does not another
30:20
great stunt coming up here we forget about this one this is a good fall too by another stuntman out of the helicopter
30:25
[Music] [Applause]
30:31
that's a great fall man that's a that is he jumped out of that helicopter yeah that's again a guy falling out of the
30:37
helicopter and it goes off screen there behind the ledge you know you're looking over the side there but he's hitting the rocks below that's 120 feet fall
30:45
yeah and he's falling out of a moving vehicle it's stationary but that's the
30:50
helicopter's still moving around there's no parachute on this guy there's no safety
30:55
net this guy's going to land again on that airbag i presume down there obviously not the raw sure yeah these bodies that are full they
31:01
make it clear they want you to see the arms are flailing and they're moving this is not a doctor they're not dummies yeah you always tell
31:08
the dummy falls because they just floppy yeah they're just flopping around yeah the guy is like moving his arms around
31:15
and they also i like the adr of the gulch screen because that's scary scary
31:20
it actually sounds rightfully so he's terrified because that rock face is coming yeah he's falling to his death
31:26
and he knows that it's not the fault that kills you it's the impact that's it's the impact it's true
31:36
rambles realize okay the threat is over the guy fell out fair enough
31:44
fly away again this is a great scene over here rambo doesn't waste any time he jumps down the rock face to go check
31:50
out the casualty when he brings up galt's bloody face this is a i would say gory's
31:56
not the right word but this movie doesn't have a lot of for a movie called first blood it really does have a lot of quote unquote gore this is probably the
32:02
goriest part of the film yeah i would say you're right he brings up that face right to his face do you
32:08
know what he's seen in that moment do you have any guesses what well let's watch you tell me what he what round i was experiencing that moment
32:15
[Music] so he grabs the rifle there you go he's
32:20
like it's like those video games you know you you kill the mob or whatever kill the kill the enemy you gotta loot
32:25
you gotta loot the weapon so you grab the right weapons that's important that we see that he has the weapon this is important
32:32
[Music] and i love this shot here's the body's on the ground you
32:38
see the steam coming off his freshly broken body this body's broken the body
32:43
is broken open so there's steam coming from it that's a great observation that's not something i actually picked
32:49
up on but that's amazing that they put that in obviously it's sure they the makers of the film to show you a that
32:55
it's cold out and it was cold out in real life but they wanted to show you that the body because it's warm inside
33:01
and as the flues are leaving this guy's broken body it's causing steam in there what an amazing effect
33:10
[Music] so what are your thoughts here well it's
33:15
very creepy because galt's eyes are open at first i thought he was assessing if this guy's
33:22
alive or not but then you know as the scene goes on you know i i don't really
33:27
know what he's thinking i mean listen to the music cue change i'm going
33:33
to go back 10 seconds listen to the music how the music changes it's a different music score comes in and it's
33:38
a music score that you used before at the jail sequence so see if you recognize the music score and what it
33:43
represents [Music]
33:58
he's he's seeing viet cong soldier exactly yeah his post
34:04
traumatic stress disorders come in again yeah yeah you've seen the bloody face of a white person you could almost argue uh
34:11
even though this is an enemy that he had to for self-defense he took down and the side note is the only person he kills in the whole film yeah that's true that's
34:18
true let's be honest this guy had it coming sure and you know what he didn't even mean to kill him he threw the rock
34:24
at the chopper and the pilot's reaction dumped him out of the door right there's a chain of events from the rock throw
34:30
you could almost argue had gulp fallen into the helicopter the copter guy would have been like i can't do this i'm out of here like he's gonna keep chucking
34:36
rocks at my screen i'm not gonna be able to look out the windshield eventually yes exactly so that musical cue so i
34:42
don't know if how many people catch this when that q kicks in you see that look of terror in rambo's face he's looking at this bloody face
34:48
yeah that's the musical cue telling the audience hey this is a flashback yep now
34:54
the dogs are barking he doesn't have time anymore they snapped him out of it he hears they're hot on his trail it's not over yet
35:01
[Music] little trivia here he takes the jacket off gulp but we never see it again huh
35:07
yeah i guess you're right because he doesn't wear it the idea was that rambo did take it to where to keep warm but
35:13
they kind of decided it looked cooler for rambo just to be in that canvas outfit instead so they aesthetically
35:19
just decided it looks better for for the movie for the movie
35:29
did you catch that the way he drops gold's body he does hear the head hit the rock what a great like like a splat
35:34
sound yeah audience i want you to hear that again so rat was taking off the jacket off
35:40
gulp this lifeless corpse and once he's got the jack off he just drops gold into the rocks i love that there's no care
35:45
which is very talented like rambo doesn't carefully place this there's no respect to this body at all and why should there be
35:51
but i love how he drops the body let's listen to that splat again with the head hitting the rock
35:58
[Music] that's that's great
36:03
so rambo grabs the gun grabs the jacket teasel on his team the dogs they get to the very cliff where of course rambles
36:09
jumped off they probably can't believe what's just happened well right now they don't know what's happened but they got today as the cliff and they're going to
36:15
start piecing some of it together
36:23
all right all right christ
36:31
getting the lifeless body of golt on the rocks yep jesus christ
36:40
oh no no no shh [Music]
36:45
look at that wow that seems a lot more bloody than we last saw him but i guess he's bleeding more you could argue that
36:52
probably was there but you're right for this shot they made sure to show you just when this body hit the rocks it
36:58
exploded yeah
37:04
well clean them up somebody clean gulp up
37:09
oh so of course now teasel's looking through the binoculars to confirm yeah that is one dead gulp that's his buddy
37:15
that's his buddy yeah now you have to keep in mind you could
37:20
argue why is he not more upset here keep in mind teasel is also korean veteran and he's kind of not used to but this is not
37:26
the first time he's seen someone that he knows dead sure he's experienced loss before from combat but still he's
37:32
obviously upset what are your thoughts on brian dennehy in this film i was going to talk about him just now i think
37:39
we've all seen brian probably in a lot of things most of the ones i think of
37:44
he's an affable likable character and he starts out this movie almost like that right and i mean
37:52
of course when he has the chat with rambo in the police cruiser things start taking a darker turn but i think his
37:59
performance in this movie is fantastic he's certainly he's not a must a mustache twirling villain i guess kind
38:06
of like gal maybe because gal just seems like an a-hole but diesel's not like
38:12
that i mean he's certainly not on the side of good but he doesn't seem like a bad guy he's
38:18
complicated yeah exactly and brian dennehy is great in this movie like i said he does everything he tries to keep
38:24
this manhunt in order rambles now he's really made it personal by killing his friend
38:30
gold even though that's how he sees it right that's just how he's going to register this killing there's no other way for him but this is this guy has
38:36
been killed by now keep in mind we'll well we're going to get to it because that's the scene we're going to end on is when they get to galt's body after
38:42
that sequence but they're going to discover who ramble is shortly but now we've got this sequence here where
38:47
rambo's about to sew up his arm oh oh yeah little side story here so we see him sew up his arm but what sly did he
38:55
went to some pharmacy and hope they didn't know who he was he actually was asking for before he sold himself up he
39:02
actually went to the pharmacy asking for tylenol and to see how the makeup would look
39:08
to the people in the pharmacy and they all believed it he didn't tell them it was makeup and he walked out with the
39:13
supplies and he says to this day i you know i've never told him you know unless he's seen the film and recognize me in
39:18
the film he wanted to see you so you want to give a shout out to the makeup guys that did a great job on his army which they did do
39:24
man this is hard when i watched this the other night i averted my eyes for a moment because this wound gushes yeah
39:32
it's fantastic great great makeup work now it looks so realistic that when i was a kid unlike you i saw this film
39:39
when i was you know nine years old and sure i was such a sly market at a young
39:44
age and i used to convince my i used to remember telling my parents no mommy don't understand i don't know how i knew
39:50
but i i think i maybe i just knew inertly that he because it was him hitting that tree so even as a kid i
39:56
recognized that was sly at least that for that sec now i used to think it was sly all three parts sure but it's not he just does the last
40:02
sir and that was why he's on a mission he only does the last only the last third of the sun yeah but that being said i thought when i was
40:09
a kid it was sly all the way through not understanding how stunts work but i knew sly hit the tree so i remember saying
40:14
because he hit the trees i truly believed his arm was cut because of that stunt i spent many years in my early
40:19
childhood like probably nine i don't know maybe 14 convinced that sly really cut his arm
40:25
and why not film him sewing it up that's how good it looks it looks real it does now what he's got though just you know
40:30
jared he's got a pump under his uh armpit and so when he flexes his bicep he's squeezing the blood oh that's
40:36
awesome yes watch for that did not know that of course the famous knife with the
40:43
hollow handle it's got everything in there it's got this dude did you have a rambo knife please don't insult me what
40:49
do you think look i had a rambo knife as a kid you could buy these freaking things at
40:54
walgreens yeah at some point they were everywhere i don't know if it was called the rambo knife but people that made
40:59
these nice these knock off versions they knew exactly what they were looking like they had the screw tops the compass on
41:05
absolutely i legit used the compass from this knife when i was i used to be a boy scout you know when i was a kid yes so
41:10
did i there you go yes we're both nerds on a podcast go figure look at the trajectory of boy scouts
41:16
[Laughter] so here's where he pulls up the fishing line and the needle of thread
41:24
[Music]
41:29
now watch as he flexes his arm he'll squeeze through squeezes the pumps of blood
41:35
right there see that when he clinches his arm oh yeah yeah that's
41:40
oh man so well done it is
41:46
that's it's amazing it's amazing i like it there's a little flex service bicep though oops you see that biceps foot
41:54
flex yeah the biceps biceps hey man little freudian slip there uh
42:00
hey i got a mad crush on sly what do you want from me there you go uh so yeah
42:06
oh i'm right in the face here um look that's a close-up shot no cgi
42:11
he tugs on everything the the skin tug with the needle going through it's just a great makeup job by the by
42:18
the way yeah and this is only enhanced in 4k because it looks even more real it
42:24
doesn't look more fake it looks great it holds up yeah i need to get that 4k ball i'm gonna get the whole box set in 4k
42:30
that's a gift to ryan and christmas time i think okay good deal i can't figure it out
42:37
how do you fall out what's the matter so they're wondering how gulp fell out of the helicopter
42:43
which is a fair question because you'd have to assume they know that rambo is only on the ground he was always left to
42:49
enter the ground so they're wondering how did golf fall so that's a kind of a fair now the events of chasing ramble have
42:55
caused galt's death but even at this time they don't quite know they haven't talked to the helicopter guy just yet sure so that makes sense why would they
43:02
think that rambo was responsible for that how what could he do right but like
43:07
a rock he threw a rock that's true this nailed his suckers as
43:13
so that was the uh orville the dog guy listen yeah he's really gone whole for getting ramble he's always he's almost like gulp
43:20
part two when it comes to chasing rambo now yes and now uh this guy here to
43:25
teasel's right they point out ramble this is a great little exchange here when rambo comes out after sawing his arm
43:33
looks like he wants to turn himself in [Music] there's one man dead
43:40
it's not my fault i don't want any more hurt so this is a great shot here
43:46
they have the shot of the cr the police crew looking down at rambo then the next
43:51
shot is down with rambo looking up at the police crew it's a great back and forth shot yeah he says it's not my
43:57
fault one man dead was not my fault i don't want any more hurt and this is very telling because he says i don't
44:02
want any more hurt meaning if you come after me more will get hurt like you stop chasing me i'm dangerous you're not
44:09
dangerous you will get hurt if you chase me yeah freeze stand right where you are give yourself
44:16
up but i didn't do anything i'm warning you boy don't make a move i'll blow your head off i didn't do
44:22
anything now this is an illegal firing by the
44:28
police i think am i wrong i don't know we need doug on this doug if you're listening to this episode send me an
44:33
email a ramble rambleseriespodcast gmail.com and let me know if teasel firing the
44:40
shot at a suspect walking backwards it's like because they don't know that gulp fell
44:45
down on the helicopter because like even can you shoot a fugitive i don't know huh what are your thoughts even just
44:52
firing because he's not i don't think he's trying to hit him is this a like a warning shot that he's
44:58
firing i can't i don't know oh is he trying to hit him yes look at his deputy
45:04
he's got his rifle up as well he didn't tell him to not shoot right yeah that's true now oh oh yeah he now does he gets
45:12
wounded does he get hit like he grabs his face now what do you think happens here does he get hit because it's never
45:17
indicated again what do you think he's doing here maybe acting like he's shot i think so yeah but every time i see the
45:23
sequence he goes out he holds his head because he's holding his eye and he's never indicates again that he's ever hit
45:28
there's no but he doesn't have a wound there that's right so i think we're led to believe here that i think that's how
45:34
good ramble is that's how much of he's a green brain he's the best so he's been fired on so i think he's indicating that
45:40
he you know he wants them to believe he's injured
45:51
[Applause]
45:57
i think we hit him all right let's get down there see i think we hit him yeah whoa sheriff the base come in
46:04
go ahead will leicester where down in the gorge gold's dead all right where the hell is
46:10
that goddamn chopper that gold's dead all right i don't know sure
46:16
yeah they're looking for the guy like where's where'd the helicopter go what dude he's just gone
46:22
wow that helicopter guy he's probably got some post traumatic stress now he's yeah he's flipped out he's just a lumber
46:28
guy yeah exactly he won't come will since there's a storm headed your way i
46:35
don't give a god damn what's on its way i want that chopper back here right now i don't want gold's body out here all
46:41
night i'll do it so interesting so teasel wants the chopper back to get gold's body out of
46:48
there which is i guess fair but that's an interesting thing to be kind of worked up about at this point yes
46:53
especially when there's a dangerous fugitive that they're supposed to be tracking here they're all taking a
47:00
moment for galt they're all taking a moment yeah now this guy on the radio who's not a part
47:07
of the crew but he's part of the crew but he's not here with the action he says listen will he picked one hell of a guy to mess around with this came over
47:13
the teletype now i looked up what teletype is do you want to know what it is oh i think i know okay tell do tell it's a
47:20
early caveman facts machine i mean fax machines are now used by cavemen but it
47:27
was sort of this instantaneous communication that would print out a piece of news or to give you a bunch of
47:34
information it was yeah you're close close so what a tell type was you're right about the facts idea meaning yeah
47:40
if you had a tell type and i had a teletype i would it's like a text message i could type to you and your
47:46
teletype would actually type out what i'm typing to the teletype yes okay i
47:51
got you so it's instantaneous text communication on paper so it's just
47:56
a typewriter is typing what i'm typing that my office office a types out this information so this came on the teletype
48:02
and you say why don't you just make a phone call what's the same idea like this is now on official page now i have a print out of yeah you have a hard copy
48:10
i have a hard copy of the information that's all it was it was just a typewriter typing
48:15
you're correct that that's caveman text messaging it is it's just on paper that's exactly what it is it's text
48:22
messaging on paper and what's funny is again the simple phone call is still faster and easier just like exactly
48:28
just like today texting is not easier and faster than a phone call but anyways no exactly so well i sure picked one a
48:34
hell of a guy to mess around with this came over the teletype a few minutes ago john rambo is a vietnam vet he's a green
48:41
beret congressional medal of honor guy's a war hero jesus that freak i knew there
48:47
was something about that guy so david caruso so mitch yeah mitch i knew there's
48:53
something about that guy now he's kind of excited that he caught on there was something about this guy
48:59
that was above and beyond just a normal like straggler vagrant that this guy yeah this is what they're indicating to both
49:05
the police into galt sorry to uh teasels like hey you guys are chasing down a green parade
49:10
this is the best of the best this guy is a vietnam vet he knows how to fight he knows how to go on the this is a this
49:16
isn't your average long-haired hippie walking through the force but that doesn't scare teasel it
49:22
actually just irritates him makes him more angry yeah because he's a korean vet and he he doesn't like the idea of
49:27
this guy's defeat it actually just makes him hate him more exactly and so but mitch is kind of excited by it and he's
49:33
gonna he's gonna hear about it from teasel here in just a second this is what went on the sequence here but he's about to hear from teasel like stop
49:39
talking about this guy in such a way yeah i double checked it will you want me to
49:44
do look at that create acting there by dennehy where he's trying to process things he's got a lot going through his
49:51
mind here i double checked it will what do you want me to do and he's like thinking i i don't yeah at this moment
49:56
right now i i just don't want any of this to be happening right now exactly i want you to do what i told you to do god
50:02
damn it get that chopper back here now out green beret
50:08
war hero that's great
50:15
and what the hell's the matter with you guys he's one man he's wounded so now here we go they bring up the
50:21
wounded again i think that was a play by rambo to make it seem like he's weak he's injured so they're kind of like the
50:27
dawdling here a little bit but in that time john's just getting further further away from them yeah they think he's a wounded
50:33
animal but he's not he's not as crippled as they think he's actually well that'll be the next episode he's
50:38
setting up stuff right now while they're sitting around here kind of playing what they do next john hasn't stopped working yeah those green berets
50:46
they're real badasses why don't you let the state police handle this okay so that part triggers
50:53
so mitch says why don't we let the state plea handle this now this pisses off teasel you want to guess why you have
50:58
any theories why that might be well i don't know there may be some small man syndrome there i think so
51:05
where he no no no i don't we don't need them in here we can do this uh it certainly seems to me that's where
51:11
his head's at it's a combination of that and i also think it's due to the fact that well we'll see a speech why this pisses
51:18
him off but the idea is this is a mess that he not that necessary his the sheriff's department started this mess
51:24
and he doesn't want to he doesn't in his own pride doesn't want somebody else cleaning it up and he's also mad that galt is dead
51:31
because of this mess so yeah say please come and take care of it sure but mitch the youngest on the crew saying
51:37
hey let let the more capable department handle this that really pisses him off so here's his response to this look at
51:43
this anger here right here i know
51:54
look at him look at him it's our gold boy he and i were friends when your mama was
51:59
still wiping your nose now he's dead he's dead because of that
52:05
psycho out there now you listen boy and you listen to me good i'm gonna get that son of a [ __ ] and i'm gonna pin that congressional
52:10
medal of honor to his liver but i'm gonna do it with you
52:16
or without you wow i love that moment now apparently that was done about four or five takes and
52:23
then he was really pulling on david crystal's hair that he had some red hair on those gloves after the takes were
52:28
over oh wow and crucial just took it took it like a like a young man you know he allowed
52:34
that that's real acting that's awesome sure that's awesome i also think maybe
52:39
teasel do you think there could be some he doesn't want other people involved because they're complicit in what's been
52:46
happening here not just that i think it's beyond that too and maybe i'm cheating a little bit because i read the book
52:52
okay what's the book say about that but i think they're leaning towards us in the film too but now it's not just that it's
52:57
personal but it's like it's his hunt you know it's his it's his moby dick sure
53:03
this no one's taking this kill from this is my kill i'm taking that's what he's saying i'm going to pin that metal on
53:09
